If you match it’s fine. If you’re In Canada the more logical path so to do residency there, write your steps - all of them, and plan on doing a US fellowship on an h1b visa. But you need to write your steps.
It’s all planning. It’s easier to get into ortho in Canada. In fact if US Med students miss out on ortho in the US, they should consider applying to a Canadian program they could do ortho there and return to the US easily. There’s direct equivalency.
Think outside the box. Big picture.
Addendum: if you haven’t caught the logic yet. It’s arbitrage. Ortho in Canada isn’t as competitive because there are no jobs and it pays poorly for the hard job they do. So Med students in Canada don’t apply. So it’s less competitive. But you can do your training there, be well trained and jump ship to the states through a fellowship. Make sure you have an H1B or heck even a J. Visas can be converted. Don’t worry just do it.
It’s all about putting yourself in a strong position and planning years ahead.
