I'm trying to decide between 3 schools, waiting to hear back from 2 more. I am deciding between Noordacom, it is closer, I will be closer to family, LECOM, and NYITCOM. I also have some fam in NY. I visited noorda it is a nice school. I liked the people. They have research opportunities. I can look past the accreditation. They have financial limitations, but that will get resolved sooner compared to the first incoming class. I also have a scholarship coming up. Why I chose it? It's closer, smaller compared to NYITCOM class size, less nonsense compared to LECOM.

but.... I worry about their VETTING process.

Noorda just posted a palestinian student on their website...that's ok that's not an issue...as I was browsing getting to know all the students, I looked at his profile and he openly follows a known sadistic islamic extremist. He posted a Jewish man getting blown to bits on instagram. I can't believe a med student can openly follow such an account. It really disgusted me and me feel like noorda does not care about the type of people they let in. Think about it, we all take the oath to cherish and care about all mankind and treat everyone equally and cause no harm, but a MED STUDENT boldly follows an extremist that openly posts things like this and LAUGHS at the man getting blown up. It makes me think twice about this school. I don't think they vet their students and just actively look for "diversity" without looking deeper than the surface. It just made my stomach turn. If I follow someone that sadistic who posts stuff like that I would immediately block it.

Back in the day they used to look into student's social media to make sure they're not problematic. I guess no one cares anymore.

Am I overreacting? I feel so disturbed. Probably more from seeing the video. I wish I could delete it from my head.

No, you are not overreacting. Have you told anyone in student services? The diversity VP? Did you take pictures of the site and documented it?

As of the end of April 2024, many universities have had great difficulty balancing free speech rights with having an inclusive campus where everyone feels they belong and is safe. Some have been suspended for posting incendiary and offensive remarks that call for violence as a justified way to resolve the Gaza problem.

Social media policies generally give great latitude to personal websites. However this past year has shown that people are afraid of getting targeted through social media, and some are getting harassed. I bet many people will be reviewing their social media and student professionalism policies.

P.S. I have a similar SJT situation that I have developed for the HPSA/SDN SJT workshop, though it is not specific to the Gaza tragedy.

Hi ! No I haven't! I'm not sure how to approach this! I did record his follow list and showed that he follows such an account. I don't know if it will do anything.

OMG why are there so many nutjobs. Y'all are supposed to be NEUTRAL. This is so disturbing.

I told my sister about what I saw and she reported it for me. Why do I feel sh*tty. :(

You shouldn't even be considering NOORDA with the other two offers from established schools. I get wanting to be close to family but the 4 years really go by fast.

Also you say less nonsense than lecom and post about this person which seems like a pretty big issue to you. I would choose NYITCOM if given the choice.

You're not overreacting.

That student needs to be reported. People have been kicked out of residency for stuff like this.

I never recommend Noorda anyway. Too new and a really weird curriculum. I can't remember if they're a for profit school, but if so, that would be another strike.

One can't argue with LECOM's cheap tuition, although the required lectures, and dress code can be deal breakers for some.

Overall, go to NYITCOM.

And please, please, please kids, don't turn this thread into a Gaza debate. It will rapidly turn into a dumpster fire and get locked.

Hi Goro! Thank you for the response. I agree this is another strike on my list. In the beginning my husband and I were compiling a list of schools that were close by where we live so that my parents (who are retired) can be near us, we have small children, they can look after them, Noorda advertises being family friendly and I met fellow parents there as well. It felt right then. But time passes and feelings change, this is one more strike that makes me feel like they need a decade or two to tighten their standards and curriculum. /// on the other hand we also included NY and east coast schools because my and my husband's siblings live in those regions as a plan B, so we will have to maneuver towards NYITCOM. It is definitely more established.

Absolutely, I definitely don't want to go there. I'm just worried that the med school administration isn't taking this seriously. One nursing student a few years ago threatened Jewish patients on tiktok and the university didn't kick him out or do anything from what I saw.

Thank you for the responses. I appreciate it.

I chose Noorda partially because it's so family friendly (more so than other school I've looked into) and many students are parents of young children.

I do think you're overreacting about the Palestinian student. Sometimes people may follow someone on social media without being aware of every single thing that person has ever posted.

Sean he follows more than one problematic account.

I scrolled through his social media and his stories. He's incapable of being neutral. Let's be honest with ourselves for a moment, take off the "Noorda positivity goggles" and ask why someone wouldn't block/unfollow an extremist who consistently posts trauma porn and wants to work in medicine treating patients of all kinds. It is contradictory. What if he meets a Jewish patient? Do we want to take that risk, "Sometimes people may follow someone on social media without being aware of every single thing that person has ever posted?"

He follows multiple accounts that call for *violence* that does not match the oath we take as future doctors to do no harm. This is medical school, we have to take these sort of things seriously.

The fact that you are saying this just makes me question this school even more. They're choosing students that are definitely not in tune with the safety of future patients. This is awful. What is their administration thinking!

I’ll play devils advocate and ask if you ever thought for a second that this person followed a random account and that account was sold or switched their content up? I can’t count on both hands and feet how many times I have followed someone and then 3 days later that same account now has photos of some naked person promoting OF it the account suddenly turned into a “Let me help you build wealth by investing” account.

Personally I don’t know that you’re overreacting but I do feel like going through the lists of people they follow is kinda just looking for issues, especially if they aren’t posting in support of these people they follow.

Are you 100% sure that this student doesn’t oppose the views of these people and simply follow them so that they can stay up to date on the horror that they are doing? This could be similar to a democrat following a republican or vice versa. I think it’s premature to assume this person (only because they follow people who represent something else) is in support of those people.

Edit: Disregard this comment. There isnt any misinterpreting when a person is posting hateful comments as shown below.

TW ANTISEMITISM

Guys this is a big yikes. My sister sent me his Twitter. There's more. I'm not going to say anything else on this topic. But you decide for yourselves. I can't speak for the current mentality or the future. I'm definitely not going to this school. This is all public and not deleted. It makes my stomach churn.

EDIT NOTE:
The moderator team has removed the Twitter screenshots from this thread to avoid further amplifying this content.

I trust someone will report him to Noorda. This is someone unfit to be in Medicine
It's just so easily and publicly available anyone can find it with no effort. They should have been aware. If they are and don't care then it's downhill from here. And if they won't do anything, I suppose the next step is AOA directly.

It's on their school instagram. I guess it's the easiest way to introduce potential students to the school. Everyone uses social media.

Just an update—My sister and I spent the morning sending their Title IX people an email, notifying them of the posts. And we haven't gotten any response back so far. I assumed something like this would get an immediate response. "Hey don't worry, this is awful, we will get on it." Isn't too much to ask. Maybe we should have included the ones below as well. Anyway. He was in college then and was old enough to know this is wrong. At the very least if someone has remorse they delete their entire account. But again, this is out there. In public. I honestly don't expect a response back. This is just one bold inhumane future malpractice lawsuit, I imagine bigger city schools probably have more liabilities in the making like this. However they are a new school and this is another red flag.

I was looking at his twitter about an hour ago and Im pretty sure he deleted his account while I was on it. So he is definitely aware people are talking about him. Obviously we don't know if a friend gave him a heads up or his school contacted him.

Well. You can't get rid of all cyber trails. Google still retains past tweets of former accounts for a while, especially if they have been around long enough. There's mirror bot sites that harvest data. Someone like my sister who does background checks for a living, can find information if they know what they're looking for. Medical schools are obligated to have high standards. The onus is on them to make sure none of their students harbor any harmful ideology towards anyone, especially targeted minorities.

Big Yikes. Maybe consider putting a TW on those comments for anti-semitism?

But, you will get these kinds of people as patients constantly and are still expected to treat them. Can't tell you how many people come in with swastika tattoos, but are still treated by Jewish doctors. A dear physician friend of mine recently treated a patient who had a very racist tattoo, and he is black.

I don't think you overreacted and you did the right thing by telling the school, but it's out of your hands now. Schools do not have the time to vet on social media heavily before accepting someone unfortunately.

Also, go to NYITCOM!! NY is great and if you're Jewish, has robust and wonderful Jewish communities.

I will put the TW! Thank you for informing me.
You are absolutely right, there are also patients that may be bigots as well. We will come across these people often. It comes with the territory.
Update—for football and skiing— not only has the student deleted his Twitter but his instagram is now private. The # of people he follows has not changed (my initial concern was the problematic account he follows that threw a red flag about antisemitism) therefore I have to assume he was notified by a friend and hasn't changed much as a person.

It is out of our hands. Can't think of anything else to do, but I hope the school considers this is a bad look.

I'm South Korean! I never took my husband's name so I will be ok on paper. I grew up in a nice town. Met my sweet husband, he is half Lebanese/half Ashkenazi Jewish. Our families faced similar tragedies.

Thank you, I appreciate it! :)

Did you send these screenshots as well? Because as upsetting as all of them are, it's the last two that really got me and why I asked for a TW.

Unfortunately not, it was so much, we felt overwhelmed as is. I expected a response and would have sent them as well. I'm at a loss for words. I don't want to send them anymore emails. But I will not be deleting these from here as I intended before. Especially since he deleted his account.

Admittedly the posts are from 10 years ago...

While they represent a lot of evil. I suppose the question of whether he should be held accountable for things he posted as presumably a teen.
If these are from his early 20s then it's a different story...

When he was in college. He accuses the president of his school of being a jew (he is a priest). He was old enough to know better. That's why I don't take this lightly. No excuses, considering the extremist accounts he follows on Instagram currently. My sister documented his follows/ his stories just in case. It shows that he is marinating in this garbage, instead of studying his medical books and for boards. Twitter is also a place everyone goes to dump their true feelings. It is a very ugly site.

We all start prepping for med school at the minimum from college. There's never excuses for this type of rhetoric. And if he boldly posted this with his full name it means his friends are aware as well & his whole network approves of it. He has over a thousand followers on social media.

I think if this is from his time as an undergraduate and thus an adult I would agree these are very damning.

If you are concerned about age or maturity...follow the cyber trail... this kid is a freshman in 2015 while he is an upperclassman. Notice, a pre-med.

I would have included the screenshots. They speak for themselves and no email could truly summarize the contents of these posts. I don't know who would be the appropriate person to email, but I would start by emailing the deans as well. This goes way beyond being "young and stupid", and any repercussions he receives will be due to his actions alone, not yours. Just my thoughts.

I included their title IX coordinator, associate dean of students and director of human resources. They're the people in the listed contacts for title IX concerns. Never had to deal with this, not sure what else to do about it.

I decided not to delete anything. He was in college when he made these posts. He was already living a dual identity. While living as a pre-med he was writing about how he cares about humanity and the usual works, but then went on twitter with his hateful rants. Sloppy. Inexcusable. Makes everything he is doing now meaningless.

Just want to make note, by deleting twitter and hiding his instagram just proves he has something to hide. Shameless.

I would include the screenshots if you haven't already. Any reference to his social media accounts won't lead to much since it's been deleted/made private. I don't know how Noorda will react to this, but I doubt their future alumni and students will welcome having their medical degree be associated with something like this. JMT.

I am a bit conflicted about responding to this, but I will give it a try. I agree 100% that anybody posting hateful speech should be reported. Medical providers should be held to the highest of standards. I am grateful you reported this issue to the school, and I sincerely hope his hateful expression gets properly addressed.
That being said, I am uncomfortable with you posting his name publicly over here. I think one should always conduct themselves professionally. Asking for advice and reporting hateful behavior is professionsal. Doxxing somebody, even if well-intentioned, on a public forum is not.

This is public information. This isn't doxxing. If it's online, it's fair game. We are throwing 400K at these institutions and you're telling me I'm supposed to be feel bad about some hateful dual personality dirtbag who will be treating patients in the future.

Drawing attention to public information is not doxxing. That includes full name.

What is your solution? Deleting this thread? Giving him a doorway to malpractice? All of us went through absolute h*ll to get into med school because they want to avoid medical malpractice and lawsuits.

NY has a professional misconduct and physician malpractice site. Take a gander at the long list reasons of why we are held to high standard.
