I have tons of questions about major and dental schools' requirements.

Okay, I go to community college now. This semester is my first year attending college. Actually, I haven't declared the major yet.
I really want to go to transfer to one of UC schools, and go to grad. school for dental program.

I heard that it is not necessary to major in science field such as biochem., bio., and chemistry in order to get accepted in dental grad. school.
I know that it might have low possibility to get accepted comparing to students who were majoring in science fields, however, I am not a lot interested in majoring in science, but I am willing to take pre-requirements classes for grad. school.

So I am planning to major in Psychology. As long as, I met all pre-req. classes and am I okay to apply for grad. school?

What are the courses that dental schools require students to complete before they are applying (when they're in undergrad. school?

Thanks :)

I am a 1st year dental student at a competitive school in which the dental students take classes with the medical students.
I am trying to get honors in everything -- it is stressful.

My boyfriend barely passed high school and works a blue-collar job. I don't care about how much money he makes or what he does. I DO CARE that he doesn't know how to relate to what I'm going through and it is not possible for me to engage in any type of heavy scientific conversation w/o having to first explain some basics. I know most ppl don't sit around with their loved ones talking science all day, but it is difficult that he doesn't understand what I'm going through.

I am worried about:
1. our communication issues. we have different educational backgrounds; thus he can't relate to my ambitions and struggles. he doesn't talk much on the phone and I get bored talking to him a lot of times. outside of work, all he does is watch movies and play video games. we hardly ever make each other laugh. he is reclusive and not eager to make friends or hang out with the few friends he does have.
2. he is 10 years my senior, I don't want to have kids until I'm 30, and by then he'll be 40. Also, I don't want him to die b/f me.
3. he has gained a lot of weight since I last saw him. I still love him but I find myself being attracted to peers in class, especially since our relationship has become long-distance.

Outside of this, my boyfriend is perfection. He adores me and treats me with absolute respect -- like the woman he would want to marry. He said he will lose the weight. And I know he will. I have asked him to change many things and he has done them all.

I love that he is always willing to please me but I wonder if my personality is taking over his. Or perhaps that he did not have much of a personality to begin with.

My bf is just super easy going. He is the type of person who can eat my bad cooking and not give a crap. As a father or husband, he is the type of person who would work really hard, doing all the house chores, cutting grass, etc. and never complaining at all.

I know he could make me happy. I wouldn't mind making most of the money as long as he took care our future kids and the house. But sometimes, I wonder what it would be like to be with someone who I was more physically attracted to and more scientifically inclined.

I am 23 and this is only my second relationship. I don't know what I want to do.

I am not able to break up with him b/c I still love him and I don't want to be alone. However, I wonder if I could be happier with someone else. At the same time, I fear that that it would be difficult to find someone who would treat me as well as my current boyfriend.

I am almost done with my first semester of my freshman year. I have been doing well in my classes. I was invited by the dean of my school to do a brand new program they are offering for honors students. A 2+1+4 BS/MD program (2 undergrad, 1 year community service, and four years Med school) The program is brand new and the kinks have been hardly worked out yet.

As of right now, I am going to attempt the program (it is unbinding) and see how it goes. My next semester schedule is a lot of work but it seems manageable. My concern lies with my sophomore year where I will be taking: physics+lab, orgo+lab, cell lab, 2 cell electives, on top of finishing my social science requirement. Throughout this entire process I have worked with quite a few advisors and their general consensus had been that it is that its a ridiculous amount of work to finish in just two years. The faculty advisors of the program itself even think that it is a lot of work compared to many of the other BS/MD programs, but the administration is unwilling to change the structure of the program. What troubles me is that my GPA will be completely shot my sophomore year, making me unattractive candidate for med schools if I want to leave the program and apply elsewhere.

I know that is a pretty concise description of my dilemma, but I would really appreciate any comments/suggestions/advice. I am really torn about what I should do, but I feel that I should at least try because it is such an amazing opportunity.

PROS:
- Becoming a doctor a year sooner. I am really anxious about practicing medicine. It is what I have been passionate about for so long, and I know I am "rushing growing up" but I really want this
- Graduating with minimum debt. My scholarship in undergrad (merit scholarship that covers 1/2 tuition) It would also be a financial relief for my parents
- Getting an automatic acceptance to medical school! It is so competitive to get in anywhere it would be a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders.

CONS:
- I have to switch my major to biological science from psych. While biology will always be my first love, I fell in love with psychology as well. College was my first introduction to psychology and I really do find it interesting (mainly the clinical stuff) and I cannot help but feel a little sad that I will not have the opportunity to take upper level courses in psych.
- Maturity. I want to become the best doctor I can be and I think a part of that has to do with your life experiences. Will I be at a disadvantage rushing through undergrad?
- Missing out on college experiences. I have no problem exercising self control when it comes to foregoing going out on weeknights to study/get ahead with my work. I have been good with balancing clubs/school work/friends/ and a sport but I know that cutting undergrad in half will call for a lot of sacrifice.

Like medicine itself, it looks like it is going to take a lot of sacrifice but I do not want to go with the rest of my life thinking I let this opportunity slip away.

Being more direct, I wish to inform myself about all of the above.
How will it affect us as future or new doctors, in reality?
How is it affecting(in numbers and workload) older physicians?

PS-I'm really interested in Obama's plan, haven't been keeping up with the news lately.
The ball is in your court guys...

Ok, I've finally made the decision to go pre pharm... after a long long time of already being in school, but I'm positive this is the route I want to take now.

I'll be taking Chem I in the spring.

My question is, would it be OK to take chem II during the summer?
I know that a lot of information is covered in a chem course, so my advisor already told me that I prolly shouldn't take it during the summer..
However, I know my university does offer it during the summer..

I'm just concerned in terms of knowledge for the pcat.
I'm fairly certain I can keep up in terms of pace, thats not so much the issue.

Ugh, I guess I just answered my own question kinda...

I guess I just wanted thoughts from anyone else?

Did anyone else take any of the big pre pharm courses during the summer?

Also, I took Bio I back in the spring semester of 2005, would it be advisable that I take it again? I cannot remember a thing from Bio I. and again I'm asking in regards to the pcat.
I am taking Bio II this spring though.

Sorry if my first post is a dumb/obvious USTFSE type post.
Apologies in advance.

Oh, ps.
I read the faq on getting pharm experience.. but it doesn't really list any specifics..
Besides becoming a pharm tech what are my other options?
Volunteer work? I didn't know you could volunteer in a pharmacy.

I used to volunteer at a cancer hospital in houston (MD Anderson) in my last year of highschool/first year of college, but I figure something more specialized towards pharmacy would look better on an application?

Thanks
